When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters, one of the highlights (my favorite part actually) that generated a majority of buzz was when Wonder Woman, played wonderfully by Gal Gadot, made her grand appearance. The moment she is shown standing in the smoke and Hans Zimmer’s score kicks in, is magic!
The title of the track, found on the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice soundtrack is titled, “Is She With You?” which is the funny question Superman asks Batman when Wonder Woman arrives on scene. It starts off with a great drum pounding and wailing instrument which is just so fitting for our amazon warrior. So how did Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL come up with this wonderful track?
According to an interview with Cinemablend, Hans wanted the theme song for Wonder Woman to be more female, like a banshee wail that you’ve never heard before. He called upon his friend and well known cellist, Tina Guo, along with percussionist Shelia E. to assist with that powerful female sound which really paid off.
“One thing that has bugged me forever is that our superhero movies are so masculine and male generated. I wanted Wonder Woman to be… I wanted the music to be full of more female… but you know, I wanted a banshee wail, like you’ve never heard before. So my friend Tina Guo, who’s an amazing electric cellist, basically typecast her, because whenever she picks up her cello that very nice, very sweet, very polite, young woman turns into a warrior princess in one go… There is a different sound you get from the drummers when we have Sheila E. playing amongst them. It just gives you a different sound. It gives you just as much ferocity, but it’s a different type, so we were looking at things like that.”
Also in the interview, Hans stated he would like to see more women involved in creating music for the upcoming Wonder Woman film, directed by Patty Jenkins and again starring Gal Gadot. “I just wish I could bring more women into the whole process. The instruments, more women composers succeeding, more women filmmakers succeeding. Wonder Woman seems to be an obvious choice to meet that charge.”
With Hans already backing out from superhero films going forward, this is a perfect opportunity for a woman composer to be given the chance. It would be great if Tina Guo and Sheila E. can come in and continue with adding more of the powerful banshee wail sound they’ve already provided.
